Growing a physical and digital super garden.
Live art collective Trigger had a bold idea: to plant a giant sculptural ‘super garden’ right in the heart of Birmingham. But it needed a name, a brand, a story and a digital experience that could bring people in from right across the globe.
Our first task was naming. We needed something reflective of migration and easy to recall. We arrived at Polinations because of the inherent mix of both plants and countries in the words. Added to this was a new approach to language and messaging around the name, celebrating multiculturalism through horticulture. This came to life in the brand idea: Bio. Diverse. City.
A fantastic provocation from Trigger told us that this needed to be 'not one of your well-to-do horticultural events. This is more rainbow, colourful and bizarre'. We took that and developed art direction and design focussed on expressive motion, colour and brightness. We wanted people to understand this was an installation for them – not just green fingered enthusiasts.
Not everyone could get to Birmingham to see this wonderful event, despite the concept being all about 'the world', so we had an idea that the world could join in with: The Polinations App.
Months of work and research went into a concept that allowed anyone to answer questions about themselves – their origins, their attitudes, opinions and feelings – and create their own unique 'digital seed'. That seed could then be planted through augmented reality, in a physical surrounding. So anyone could create their own digital super garden.
